Overview

Microsoft Silicon and Cloud Hardware Infrastructure Engineering (SCHIE) is the team behind Microsoft’s expanding Cloud Infrastructure and responsible for powering Microsoft’s “Intelligent Cloud” mission. SCHIE delivers the core infrastructure and foundational technologies for Microsoft's over 200 online businesses including Bing, MSN, Office 365, Xbox Live, Skype, OneDrive, and the Microsoft Azure platform globally with its server and data center infrastructure, security and compliance, operations, globalization, and manageability solutions. Our focus is on smart growth, high efficiency, and delivering trusted experience to customers and partners worldwide, and we are looking for a Principal Firmware Engineer to help achieve that mission.

 

As Microsoft's cloud business continues to grow, the ability to deploy new offerings and hardware infrastructure on time, at high volume, with high quality and the lowest TCO is of paramount importance. To achieve this goal, the Firmware Center of Excellence team is instrumental in defining and delivering operational measures of success for Microsoft cloud hardware across innovation, quality, time to market, scale, and sustainability. We are looking for a Principal Firmware UEFI Engineer with a passion for customer-focused solutions and deep industry knowledge to envision and implement technical solutions that manage and optimize cloud infrastructure.

Responsibilities
  • Lead the architecture, design, development, and deployment of cloud-scale UEFI firmware and RAS solutions.
  • Own UEFI firmware development and integration, including platform enablement, feature implementation, validation, and system-level debugging.
  • Collaborate with hardware and software teams to define and deliver scalable, reliable, and serviceable solutions for cloud-scale workloads.
  • Drive projects from requirements through production readiness, managing technical dependencies, risks, schedules, and cross-functional deliverables.
  • Provide technical leadership and mentorship, driving issue resolution and ensuring firmware solutions meet quality, reliability, security, and business requirements.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 6+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, assembly x86/ARM ISA.
  • Professional working proficiency in English (written and verbal) for effective technical communication with global stakeholders.

 

Other Requirements:

  • The ability to meet Microsoft, customer, and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings: Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud Background Check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Optoelectronic Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Mathematics, or another relevant engineering or technical field is preferred. 
  • 7+ years of professional experience designing and developing firmware and software solutions to improve system reliability, availability and serviceability.
  • Technical Leader in Industry with experience in Enterprise/Cloud Server hardware architecture, understanding of HW/FW/OS interactions, expertise in Server, GPU features architecture/integration
  • Experienced in leading debugging complex system level issues and providing recommendations on potential fixes/tradeoffs to meet the business needs.
  • Demonstrated skills in C (programming) Experience managing complex partner engagement and leading engineering collaboration
  • High tolerance to ambiguity and ability make progress when situations are in flux. 
  • Experience in big data mining, familiar with Hadoop/Spark, is a plus.
  • Proven track record in technical leadership, system architecture, and mentoring engineering talent.
