About interviewing at Apple

One of tech's least standardized loops: you interview for a specific team, and every stage belongs to it. Recruiter/hiring-manager screen, one to three 45–60 minute Coderpad coding screens, a system design round shaped by Apple's reliability and privacy constraints, and a behavioral round — then a panel debrief. There is no central question bank; questions map to the team's real stack.

Summary

Apple is where individual imaginations gather together, committing to the values that lead to great work. Every new product we build or service we create is the result of us making each other’s ideas stronger. That happens because every one of us shares a belief that we can make something wonderful and share it with the world, changing lives for the better. It’s the diversity of our people and their thinking that inspires the innovation that runs through everything we do. When we bring everybody in, we can do the best work of our lives. Here, you’ll do more than join something — you’ll add something. Do you want to help build some of the largest and most consequential enterprise and customer technology systems in the world? Join Apple’s Information Systems and Technology (IS&T) organization. IS&T is the engine behind everything Apple does for customers and for the people who build for them. It’s Apple’s central nervous system. Supporting 2.5 billion active Apple devices, processing billions of secure transactions, and keeping the technology that defines modern life running flawlessly, IS&T makes the impossible feel effortless. Finance Engineering is IS&T's dedicated technology partner for Apple's finance organization — including Controllership, Accounts Payable, Tax, and Internal Audit. The team builds and delivers integrated technology solutions that keep Apple's financial operations running accurately, efficiently, and securely at global scale. Finance Engineering also works closely with finance teams to develop custom tools that improve productivity and bring greater automation and consistency to financial operations across Apple.

Description

We are looking for a highly experienced Senior Software Engineer to help define and build the next generation of intelligent native experiences across iOS, iPadOS, and macOS. In this role, you will serve as a technical leader for native application development within Finance Engineering. You will own architecture and technical direction for complex, business-critical applications used by finance professionals, approvers, auditors, and leaders across Apple. You will work across organizational and technical boundaries—partnering with product, design, backend, platform, security, and AI/ML teams—to define scalable solutions for complex financial workflows. Beyond delivering individual features, you will help establish reusable application foundations, engineering standards, architectural patterns, and technical strategy that enable multiple teams and products to move faster while maintaining Apple's expectations for quality, security, performance, and user experience. This role is well suited for an engineer who thrives in ambiguous problem spaces, can simplify complex systems, exercises strong technical judgment, and influences engineering direction through both hands-on execution and technical leadership

Key Responsibilities

Provide technical leadership and architectural direction for large-scale native applications across iOS, iPadOS, and macOS, driving solutions from ambiguous problem definition through production delivery. Design and build sophisticated native experiences using Swift, SwiftUI, UIKit, and AppKit, with strong judgment around platform-specific interaction patterns, application lifecycle, state management, modularization, and reusable components. Define scalable application architecture across UI, domain, networking, persistence, synchronization, concurrency, security, and observability, establishing shared foundations and engineering standards that can be leveraged across multiple applications and teams. Apply modern Swift and concurrency capabilities—including async/await, actors, structured concurrency, Sendable, cancellation, and asynchronous streams—to build responsive, reliable, and maintainable applications. Architect robust client-server and data experiences, including API integration, authentication, real-time updates, local persistence, caching, offline operation, background synchronization, conflict resolution, schema evolution, and resilient failure recovery. Build platform-appropriate productivity experiences across iPhone, iPad, and macOS, including multi-window workflows, tables and data-dense interfaces, menus, commands, keyboard shortcuts, drag and drop, notifications, deep links, widgets, and other relevant system integrations. Design secure applications for sensitive financial workflows using Apple and enterprise security capabilities such as Keychain, Secure Enclave, CryptoKit, LocalAuthentication, SSO, managed application configuration, and secure data handling practices. Design and integrate intelligent and AI-assisted experiences using technologies such as Foundation Models, Core ML, Vision, Natural Language, and App Intents, while ensuring generated output remains governed by appropriate validation, authorization, and business controls. Partner closely with product, design, backend, platform, security, and AI/ML teams to simplify complex financial workflows and influence end-to-end architecture, APIs, and platform capabilities needed to deliver high-quality native experiences. Drive application quality through strong accessibility, internationalization, automated testing, performance profiling, observability, crash analysis, CI/CD, staged releases, and production-readiness practices. Lead investigation and resolution of complex issues across performance, memory, concurrency, networking, security, and distributed-system boundaries using Xcode, Instruments, LLDB, and related diagnostic tools. Raise the engineering bar through architecture reviews, technical design reviews, code reviews, mentoring, and clear communication of technical decisions, tradeoffs, and long-term engineering strategy.

Minimum Qualifications

10 years of professional software engineering experience, including significant experience designing and delivering complex production applications. 7 years of native Apple-platform development experience using Swift and technologies such as SwiftUI, UIKit, and/or AppKit. 7 years of expertise in Swift and modern native application development, including concurrency, memory management, modular architecture, state management, application lifecycle, and performance optimization. 7 years of experience in architecting complex applications across UI, networking, authentication, persistence, synchronization, background processing, and unreliable network conditions. Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.

Preferred Qualifications

Strong knowledge of Apple development fundamentals including app lifecycle, sandboxing, entitlements, signing, provisioning, debugging, performance profiling, and application distribution. Proven ability to lead technically complex initiatives across multiple engineers, components, or teams, make sound architectural tradeoffs, and drive solutions from ambiguous problem definition through production delivery. Strong communication and technical leadership skills, with demonstrated experience influencing engineering decisions, mentoring engineers, and raising quality through architecture, design, and code reviews. Experience integrating native apps with distributed backend services, including RESTful APIs, gRPC, GraphQL, contract-first design (e.g. OpenAPI with Swift OpenAPI Generator, Protobuf, etc.), authentication flows (OAuth 2.0, OIDC, enterprise SSO), and strategies for keeping multiple app versions in the field compatible with an evolving backend. Experience with on-device persistence and data synchronization (e.g. SwiftData, Core Data, SQLite, etc.), including schema design and migration, offline-first architectures, background refresh, and conflict resolution for data that changes on multiple devices and on the server. Experience with Natural Language Processing and Generative AI in client applications, including Apple's on-device frameworks (e.g. Foundation Models, Core ML, Vision, VisionKit, Natural Language, App Intents), integrating with server-side Large Language Models (LLMs) and Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG) systems, and designing user experiences for streaming, uncertain, or AI-generated content. Track record of leading software projects that span multiple, distributed teams as a tech lead (TL), while mentoring senior-level software engineers. Hands-on experience leveraging GenAI coding tools (e.g., Claude) to accelerate the software development lifecycle, enhance code quality, and streamline debugging and testing processes. Experience with Apple platform security and enterprise deployment, including Keychain, Secure Enclave, CryptoKit, LocalAuthentication, App Transport Security and certificate pinning, Mobile Device Management (MDM), managed app configuration, and enterprise SSO extensions.
